She is dressed completely in black, wearing a black backpack with a skateboard attached to it. The only item of color she wears is a blue shark tooth around her neck.
As she makes her way across the campus of San Francisco State University, the place that has been her home for little more than a year, it is clear to any onlooker that her mind is full of dreams and hopes; ones for which she is willing to do anything to achieve.
Sara is a 21 year old junior who transferred to SFSU from a college in her hometown, Glendale, CA. She came to San Francisco for two very different reasons: to pursue her dreams of becoming a playwright and simply because she likes the cold weather.
At first glance, she doesn’t seem like the type of person to enjoy classical music, theatre, drama, and opera. But then again, there is so much more to any person than we can see at first glance. As she elaborated on her love of drama, she transformed from sassy and unapproachable to passionate and excited to share how she feels.
When asked why she loves theatre, Sara said, without hesitation and with a twinkle in her eyes, “Because it’s like magic”.
She was first inspired by her uncle, who is a successful Broadway producer. Ever since she was a kid, she has loved the stage, but has never aspired to be a movie star.
Sara explained that “drama is like a one time thing”. There’s no saying cut and redoing a scene if you mess up.
She also likes that with theatre, you can immediately tell if the audience likes it, whereas with movies, you can work for months without knowing the kind of response you will receive. At the end of the day, Sara’s passion for theatre is what keeps her going and makes her motivated to get out of bed every morning.
She concluded by saying, “Basically, I love drama because it lets me be myself, without having to hide anything”.
