Here’s an opportunity to gain recognition for your students and your program. See Northern CA Press Women’s Association High School Contest Director Betty Packard’s letter below for more information.
Happy New Year,
I am sure you are all very involved with returning to school after the holidays and beginning a new year. Attached you will find the cover letter as well as the entry form for this year's Northern CA Press Women's High School Journalism contest. You will notice that this year there also are categories for web/video entries. This is in response to the schools that now provide such a program and NFPW's desire to encourage professionalism in all forms of journalism. All first place winners will be forwarded to NFPW for national judging and those first place winners will be announced in the Fall edition of the Dow Jones Adviser.
The rules are to be followed this year. See the attached cover guidelines for explanation. The main ones are:
* Entry fee of $3 per entry. However, if this is a problem for any of your students, please let me know. There are scholarships available to allow for any student who wishes to enter but cannot because of the cost.
* DO NOT staple entries.
* Be sure the deadlines are followed. All entries to be received by February 13, 2010. They are to be mailed to Betty Packard, 1419 De Haro Street, San Francisco CA 94107.
* Students may enter as many categories as they wish and as many entries per categories as they wish but make certain they enter their best work and do not just make work for the judges.

PLEASE feel free to forward this contest info to ALL interested journalism teachers in Northern CA. This includes all schools from Bakersfield North to the border.
Every year Northern CA reaps many awards for the entries they forward to national. Last year we had six national winners out of 14 first-place winners sent to national. PRETTY GOOD, I would say!! But we can't send our best if the best doesn't enter. We look forward to having lots and lots of entries from lots and lots of schools. We will be announcing state winners by April 17th and hope to announce national winners by May 10th.
Good luck!!
Betty Packard
CPW High School Journalism Contest Director
