Join us for professional development and a chance to get to know your NorCal colleagues better.
November 7, 2018
With more space and increased opportunities for discussion and collaboration, this year’s adviser development teach-in promises another great workshop for journalism teachers and student media advisers from all program types.
Similar to the 2017 retreat, the Dec. 8, 2018 program will offer a full day of breakouts led by award-winning journalism teachers. With sessions ranging from 20 minutes to an hour, presenters will guide participants through hands-on application, question-and-answer sessions and pair-share activities. We’ve added space for better table talk among teachers, too.
Adviser development sessions:
- Diversity, Inclusivity & Story Ideas
- Building Rapport with Your Administration
- Investigative Story Tips
- Publication Reviews
- Checking Your Work
- Multimedia Package Planning
- Identifying Useful Patterns in Video Stories
- Doing More With Less
- Tough Conversations
- Best Practices in Grading
New this year, the teach-in registration includes a catered lunch with a large-group session on best practices in grading for journalism classes. Bring your questions and strategies for roundtable dialogue as veteran advisers from all program types share what works, what doesn’t and what might.
After the workshop sessions end at 4 p.m., participants have the option to move to an informal setting on site for reflection in order to plan strategies for implementing ideas learned throughout the day.
Saturday evening, advisers are invited to join the group for dinner at BottleTaps to continue the networking and strengthen relationships in the NorCal advising community. The adviser social is tentatively planned for 6 p.m. Those who plan to stay overnight are encouraged to book rooms at the teach-in site, Four Points by Sheraton Pleasanton.
