The Journalism Education Association offers its Certification program as a professional development opportunity to offer national certification to scholastic journalism teachers and advisers. Certification recognizes proficiency in areas directly connected to scholastic journalism and has two levels, Certified Journalism Educator (CJE) and Master Journalism Educator (MJE). Each of the areas tested in the Certification process is aligned with JEA’s Standards for Journalism Educators.

Obtaining JEA Certification shows administrators, parents and students that you are highly qualified in your field. Demonstrating this commitment to excellence increases a teacher’s credibility, especially since California does not offer a specific credential for journalism. JEANC endorses JEA Certification and recommends all members pursue CJE and MJE status.

Ready? The JEA Certification Commission offers exams at each spring and fall national convention, but if you’d prefer to take the test closer to home or with a group of your NorCal colleagues, let us know. We can arrange for a commission member to host a test date in your area. Contact Sarah Nichols for information about CJE/MJE Certification, including how to prepare, how to schedule the exam locally, or for help with any other Certification questions.
