Free monthly photo contest for students to launch Sept. 1

To match cell phone photography practice with friendly competition and teacher feedback, JEANC will host a monthly photo contest. On the first day of each month, a theme will be announced via JEANC’s Twitter and Facebook pages, along with a message in the closed adviser email group (Not subscribed to that? Click here.).

Students may submit up to three images each month using our contest form. The photo contest has only two rules: Entries must come from students of JEANC adviser members and must be taken using cell phones, not DSLR cameras. Each theme will be open-ended to invite creativity and with distance learning and COVID-19 safety precautions in mind.

Images do not need to be published but must be taken during the open dates for that month’s theme.

The contest will close each month on the 28th, at which time photography adviser judges will record a critique video of the month’s entries. Student winners and their photos will be showcased on JEANC’s platforms along with a digital certificate sent by email. The critique video, which also can serve as a supplemental teaching resource for advisers, will be shared on the first of the next month along with the new monthly theme. The contest will run September through December 2020 and, based on participation, may continue in the spring semester.

At the end of the contest period, all monthly winners will be entered in a drawing for one student to receive a $100 gift card. To encourage monthly participation, JEANC also will award a year-end prize for the student media staff with the most winners overall.

The contest provides an ongoing opportunity for students to practice their skills, gain feedback and earn recognition for their work.

November’s theme is “Abundance.” Students can enter up to three times. FILL OUT THIS FORM to enter November’s contest and fill out the form separately for each entry.

Please note that each month has a different entry form.
