Nearly 300 Northern California scholastic journalists and advisers converged at the Sacramento Convention Center last weekend, Oct. 12-13, 2013. They heard from student speakers, advisers and local media professionals, who spoke on everything from media ethics to the changing journalism landscape to the many ways to emphasize teamwork in the publications room. Keynoter Emily Banks of Mashable.com shared her own story of ascending from high school journalism editor to Managing Editor at a major technology news outlet.
On Friday evening, over 100 student journalists competed in on-site contests. Winners were announced at the closing ceremony on Saturday afternoon, and the list of all winners can be found here. Also announced at the closing ceremony were the winners of the Best of the West contest, a competition among publications present at the convention. Those winners can be found here.
JEANC would like to thank the California Newspaper Publishers Association as well as sponsors CSU Chico Department of Journalism, Balfour, Jostens and Herff Jones for supporting another successful state convention.
