The Harker Upper School
Publications advised:
“Talon” yearbook
How long have you been advising?
Two years (now in year 3), all at Harker. I am originally from Sacramento, but grew up in the suburbs of Portland, Oregon, before spending my adult life moving all around the country: Bay Area to Chicago to Delaware to Chicago again to New York City to Nashville and finally back to the Bay!

What’s the best part of your advising day?
I love hearing the kids brainstorm with one another. They eventually manage to come up with great, memorable ideas while generating a lot of silly ones along the way.
What’s great about your publication kids?
TALON kids (or “TFam”) are great for a million reasons. I particularly appreciate the genuine care and support they have for one another, and their ability to appreciate the fun aspects of their job even when they are horribly sleep-deprived.
What’s your favorite part of being an adviser?
I love getting to interact with the kids every day. Every effort we make to create something special is rewarding. And there are a lot more laughs and smiles than there were in my previous career as an attorney.
Where do you find your journalistic inspiration?
From the Director of Harker’s Journalism program, JEA Rising Star Whitney Huang! She has done an amazing job growing Harker’s program, continually looking for ways to improve our own publications, learn from others, support our students and being a great mentor and friend to me.
Why are you a JEANC member?
The JEANC community is incredibly supportive. Everyone I’ve met has been eager to share resources and tips to help other schools’ publications. This was huge for me as a new teacher in the midst of a career change. I’m proud to be a member.
What do you like to do for fun?
Run (and coach high school runners!), play chess, watch the 49ers and Giants or Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Favorite journalism movie:
I can’t choose just one. I thought Spotlight was moving and Shattered Glass was entertaining and informative, but Newsies probably makes me the happiest. And my fiancee loves older movies so I have a special place in my heart for His Girl Friday.
Last great book you read:
“The Haunting of Hill House”
