BEST OF THE WEST
BW01 Broadcast
1st Place Staff Unleashed, Whitney High School, Rocklin. Link 1 | Link 2 | Link 3
Judges’ Comments: The anchors for Unleashed really did their jobs. They truly carried the segments with smooth transitions throughout the broadcast. The pacing of the program, along with its variety, was quite professional. The overall technical execution was impressive and showed a high degree of talent among the high schoolers. Unleashed is a masterclass in student journalism. The program delivers a well-rounded selection of balanced, high-quality stories that rival professional broadcasts. What truly sets the show apart is the poise of the anchors and reporters; they appear natural, confident, and entirely at ease behind the desk. It is clearly a top-tier production, and the advisor should be incredibly proud of what this team has accomplished.
2nd Place Neel Satyavolu, Savannah Taylor and Melody Xu. InFocus, Palo Alto High School, Palo Alto. Link 1 | Link 2 | Link 3
Judges’ Comments: The audio and video quality of the production were excellent. The anchors were lively, and they did a great job overall in carrying the broadcast. The feature story was interesting and probably had a broad appeal (as most stories with dogs do). Smooth out the transitions between stories a bit and keep growing the program, which is already quite strong. InFocus is on the verge of greatness. While there is immense potential in the program, becoming a true “force to be reckoned with” will require focusing on technical execution and editorial depth. By sharpening the scriptwriting and adding more substance to their packages, the team can elevate the broadcast to match the clear talent of the crew.
3rd Place Rowan Sheng, Nathan Turnbeaugh and Ayaan Omer. ScotCenter, Carlmont High School, Belmont. Link 1 | Link 2 | Link 3
Judges’ Comments: What a strong effort by ScotCenter’s digital team. The broadcasts covered a variety of relevant topics that served the school’s audience. Most of the work here needs to be done on the technical side. Improvements should be made in the quality of the video and audio components. Also, work on training up on-camera talent so that speakers are more conversational instead of pasted in place. On-camera talent needs to be more natural and conversational. ScotCenter puts together a solid effort. ScotCenter currently feels more like a collection of packages than a complete news program. To reach a professional standard, the show needs to prioritize the “anchor-viewer” connection. Currently, the anchors appear uncomfortable and overly reliant on the teleprompter, suggesting a lack of preparation. Developing a cohesive show flow and improving anchor delivery are essential next steps for this program.
BW02 Feature Magazine
1st Place Arjun Bharat, Tyler Cheung, Scarlett Frick and Sarah Thieman. Via Verde, Palo Alto High School, Palo Alto. Link 1 | Link 2 | Link 3
Judges’ Comments: Viking Magazine offers a strong combination of vivid writing, compelling action photography, and well-made graphics, served to readers in well-designed pages. All three covers immediately grab readers’ attention and draw them through 40-plus pages of quality sports-related content. Each story is a memorable read; each photo rates a “wow.” The thoughtfully written staff editorial on page three allows the magazine a role in its school community leadership.
2nd Place Shiori Chen, Kiana Chen and Isabelle Ling of Highlander, Carlmont High School, Belmont. Link 1 | Link 2 | Link 3
Judges’ Comments: The cover photos reflect the versatility of content Highlander magazine offers readers. Each magazine has a theme, such as February’s issue, with its theme of belonging, and March’s issue, with its ideas of the future. Writing, photography, artwork/graphics and page design are strong. The Opinion section is strong, and editorials in each issue allow the magazine a place in its school community leadership.
3rd Place Cailey Quita. Via Verde, Palo Alto High School, Palo Alto. Link 1 | Link 2
Judges’ Comments: I felt like I was going places with the two issues I saw of Via Verde. Each issue is a fascinating look at where students and teachers have traveled. Cover photography is engaging and is effective in drawing readers into the magazine. Writing, photography, and page design are strong and kept me engaged throughout each issue. Staff made effective use of the back covers for photos that I thought were stronger than the cover photos. Both issues were fascinating reads.
BW03 Newsmagazine
1st Place Florence Hu, Anthony Luo, Emily Wu and Ruiyan Zhu. The Saratoga Falcon, Saratoga High School, Saratoga. Link 1 | Link 2 | Link 3
Judges’ Comments: “An excellent publication that is deeply invested in your school. I love how you shed light on a lot of things people don’t always see, from counseling staff to alumni struggling with addiction to night-time custodial staff, and on and on and on. This paper has your school community front and center on every page. Design is excellent: clean and engaging, although sometimes color and background art seem more about decoration than helping the reader. Writing is also clean. Decent lead variety and (although others may differ), I don’t mind the amount of first-person. Photos and computer-generated art are well-balanced–there is room for more WOW in your photography and maybe some branching out into well-conceived environmental portraits. Overall, love this publication. One of the hallmarks of an exceptional publication and staff is the ability to do less when more feels “better”. It seems clear this staff understands the imperative of letting the work speak for itself, and to very often reject the impulse to “fancy up” things that do not need adornment. I’d encourage the team to lean into that even more and ask critical questions about how/why a design idea adds to the audience’s understanding of the work — color for the sake of color is never a good idea. Also — strong, smart reporting that demonstrates an understanding of your audience and the issues that may be affecting them. Excellent work getting multiple voices and working to reflect things that are happening not just in the school but in the surrounding community. This is, pound for pound, a stellar publication and rivals, in some cases, even college publications. Keep up the good work.
2nd Place Sophia D’Sa, Jillian Ju, Isabelle Kok, Liz Liu, Stella Petzova and Benjamin Zhang. El Estoque, Monta Vista High School, Cupertino. Link 1 | Link 2 | Link 3
Judges’ Comments: An exceptional publication. Stellar, lively writing on a variety of topics and not afraid of depth. There’s something for everyone in this publication, and it is presented with design that is engaging, professional and gives something to surprise on nearly every page/spread (which is about the highest thing a publication can aspire to). In terms of areas to improve, there’s not a ton of photography and while your use of computer-generated images is fun and often suitable to the topic, nothing engages readers more or tells a story more powerfully than an amazing photograph. This is a solid publication and the team is to be commended for the work. Smart writing, great audience representation, and a wide array of topics. Would encourage the team to resist trying to overdo design — the concept of taking something away to make it stronger is almost always a good idea. Watch color for the sake of color, make it mean something. Overall, strong work.
3rd Place Chloe Van Pelt, Kailea Stoltzfus, Amelia Peterson. Crimson Newsmagazine, Paso Robles High School, Paso Robles. Link 1 | Link 2 | Link 3
Judges’ Comments: One of the great things about this publication is the staff’s willingness to try new things. I’d encourage you to keep doing that, but to temper it a bit by pulling back and doing fewer new things all at once. Overall good ideas.
BW04 Newspaper
1st Place Tiffany Zhu and Ashley Mo. Winged Post, The Harker School, San Jose. Link 1 | Link 2 | Link 3
Judges’ Comments: Strong writing and design. Great variety of topics. “Club Corner” is a nice touch. Good use of polls and quotes. Nice mix of photos and graphics. Nice graphics for standing columns. Good that it includes corrections from the previous issue. Well-written stories cover a broad range of topics, both school-specific and more general. Attractive design. Excellent use of photos and art.
2nd Place Crystal Zhu, Olivia Yuan. The Epic, Lynbrook High School, San Jose. Link 1 | Link 2 | Link 3
Judges’ Comments: Strong writing and graphics. Nice variety of topics, especially about school events, profiles and sports. Good use of carrying color themes through an issue. Nice mix of graphics and photos. Good use of pulled quotes.
3rd Place Sylvie Nguyen, Yu-Ming Liu and Ya-An Xue. The Oracle, Henry M. Gunn High School, Palo Alto. Link 1 | Link 2 | Link 3
Judges’ Comments: Covers a wide range of stories appealing to all aspects of readers’ interests. Well designed, attractive publication.
BW05 Website
1st Place Naomi Hsu. Scot Scoop, Carlmont High School, Belmont.
Judges’ Comments: All the tested links and functions of this website seem to be working well. The homepage is easy to follow, with its visually well-organized and labeled categories. It contains all the important bells and whistles, like links to major social networks, a comments area, printing, etc. The articles are well-developed and comprehensive. The navigation bar contains all the important departments and sub-departments. The photographs and illustrations/artwork are icing on the cake, so to speak. For entertainment, there are quizzes and games (a nice variety). Overall, a straightforward, well-functioning website that students and staff can rely on. The website has great variety, but it is almost all done very well. I like how the “In Photos” section gives snapshots of events around the school, almost like visual news briefs. The breadth of your Opinion/Cartoon/Editorial section is impressive and well done. When telling stories in general, there is a good mix of visuals like photos, infographics, pull quotes, and other multimedia. There is even good transparency when releasing the editorial board’s vote for editorials. The design is simple and to the point, but still visually appealing and easy to use.
2nd Place Sophia D’Sa, Jillian Ju, Isabelle Kok, Liz Liu, Stella Petzova and Benjamin Zhang. El Estoque, Monta Vista High School , Cupertino.
Judges’ Comments: The homepage of this website says style. From the homepage mask head and throughout the site, there is a good application of font hierarchy. There’s a balance between photographs and print/wording. White space is utilized efficiently to create visual order. Links to social networking are present. Internal links have an instantaneous response time. Games are limited, but there is a regular word puzzle for students and staff to enjoy. This website really pulls in its audience with strong visuals and keeps them there with strong storytelling. Your multimedia use is very strong. For example, the use of Flourish in your “No Kings” coverage really adds to the story and changes up the visuals. Your multimedia packages’ homepages really tie your themes together with like colors and themes.
3rd Place Lily Shi and Eva Cheng. Harker Aquila, The Harker School, San Jose.
Judges’ Comments: Aquila’s website demonstrates how to maximize the use of white space. Some obvious positives are: a typographic hierarchy for easy navigation and appealing visuals; a scrolling story gallery at the top of the homepage; standard departments like sports; and an overall balanced layout of photos and the written word. Lastly, it’s nice to see the address of the school included in the header of the homepage. The website does an excellent job of providing a wide range of coverage. Your profiles, like the “Humans of Harker” series, are some of your best content. It does a nice job of highlighting students who may not usually get covered. They do a nice job of showing the stories behind the people.
BW06 Yearbook
1st Place Lia Payne, Tanushri Rajesh, MollyAnn Caulfield and Rishabh Anand. “Poverello” Saint Francis High School, Mountain View.
Judges’ Comments: What I really loved about this publication is the authenticity of the verbal theme and the storytelling that follows. From the opening cover to the endsheets to the title page and every spread in between, what was so exciting about this publication is how they do such an amazing job of pulling everything together. The stories are rich and unique, and they hooked me. This book is a stunner in every way – theme copy, design, storytelling, photography. Pairing b&w images with selective color helped tie your photographic choices to your tagline. You never lost sight of your tagline and worked those verbals into mod headlines and ACD throughout. You made your entire book about the individuals who make up the collective of your school, and were subtle and thoughtful about your choices. Student life & sport layouts were really creative as well. Excellent work!
2nd Place Sarah Choi, Claire Curtis and Rowen Kibby. Details Whitney High School, Rocklin.
Judges’ Comments: As always, Whitney produces another award-winning publication. What makes their book so special year after year is the care that the publication takes to ensure that the verbal theme is unique to the school year. The photos and content are always rich and packed with information. Wonderfully produced, the colors and the visual approach is as special is every year. My favorite spread is 22-23: it’s a master class of color use. Mod design and layout feel fresh, and the photography and caption help remind readers of the most important moments from that week. You’ve got fantastic reaction shots in every spread, and the variety of portrait shots is another spectacular way to showcase personality beyond words. The use of your maroon and purple as the background for the primary colors is vibrant yet grounding, and the font + color layering makes the eye want to linger and look.
3rd Place Rodrigo Levy, Haley Wistrich, Tristan Petersen, Gloria O’Neil, Quinn Feeley, Margarita de Vasconcellos and Natalie Fishler. Lykos, Woodcreek High School, Roseville.
Judges’ Comments: “While the line look has been done in recent years, I was impressed with the unique take on what you were trying to accomplish. The look, the feel and the energy of your photos, cutouts and graphics really shine in this publication. Both the verbal and the visual align in great detail. This is a wonderful theme package and a wonderful book. For me, to pull this off you have to be creative throughout, and it’s evident that you did a masterful job of pulling everything together. Similar to the visual ‘Tron’ lines, the word play looked a little close to some of the other books I’ve seen in recent years, but you play it well enough with the other visual elements that everything works well. From a verbal standpoint, please pay close attention to ensuring that every spread has a verbal reference to your tagline. Although the visual directly relates, I would have liked to see a little more verbal connections. It’s hard, but it’s a must. However, this is a great book and one that I’m gathering your students will love for years to come. Everything underscores your bringing together the “constantly different” theme: The way you’ve brought the “Tron lines” throughout your book is fantastic, and shows an attention to detail that could have wavered as the book was developed, but it’s consistent and strong throughout, as you’ve wended it through headlines, photography, etc. The pairing of gray/black tone + neon + cutouts + the stroke around the cutouts — the design treatment of the photography beautifully matches your tagline. The font package is wonderful with the tagline, too. I would have liked to see an all-coverage device that related back to your tagline — your visual/verbal game is strong, yes, across individual spreads, but creating a mod that was specific to your tagline in spreads throughout would be the chef’s kiss. Beautiful work!
SPECIALITY
S01 Service Above Self
Sophia D’Sa Monta Vista High School, Cupertino.
Judges’ Comments: “Sophia embodies the principle of service above self. Her leadership is grounded in service. She approaches every responsibility with the question of what she can do to help better support others around her. She spends a lot of time mentoring new staff members. Her adviser says her leadership is not about authority but about stewardship. As a writer, she seeks out stories that matter to the broader community. She’s covered stories on access to allergy medication and the homeless. Her adviser said that Sophia thinks journalism is more than storytelling. To her, it is a form of public service as it informs, advocated and gives voice to those who are often overlooked. Her efforts to help others go beyond the journalism classroom. She is president of the school’s speech team, where she helps those on the team develop confidence. She also mentors young singers in the choir. As a camp leader, she spends time guiding and leading to encourage others. Her adviser says, “She is the most service-driven, ethical and impactful student leader I have ever encountered.”
“I agree with [the other judge’s] comments and choice. My view is that simply doing an exemplary job as an editor, for instance, doesn’t quite capture Casey [Nichols’] spirit. His influence ranged beyond his own editors and staff to the larger student body — and to teachers and administrators at the local, state and national levels. Sophia’s range of interests and her willingness to help peers outside the newsroom helped make her a clear choice for this year’s award.”
S02 Press Freedom
Gwen Domine, Eanam Maor, Ezra Rosenberg. “Local, district students protest against ICE” and Staff “Free speech is a fundamental right, not a privilege” in The Oracle, Henry M. Gunn High School, Palo Alto.
Judges’ Comments: This is a masterfully written piece that brilliantly advocates for and stresses the importance of the First Amendment. The use of a rope bridge as a symbol of the current fragility of First Amendment freedoms not only sets the flow for the editorial, but lets readers know that the assault on the First Amendment is not just a scholastic journalism problem.”
“This tightly written piece uses a national focus, that being the Jimmy Kimmel issue in September of 2025, while also showing the First Amendment under fire at a nearby high school where the principal seemingly shut off First Amendment rights to student media by removing the adviser and changing curricular requirements needed to join the school newspaper. The citation of California’s Education Code § 48907 further bolsters the argument that students’ rights to free speech are a foundation of scholastic journalism in California’s public schools. The presentation of both cases emphatically shows that First Amendment rights are for everyone. The walk-off paragraphs that incorporate George Orwell’s comments on liberty while revisiting the rope bridge metaphor strengthen the message of this outstanding editorial. Nick Ferentinos would be proud.”
S03 Diversity Coverage
Evelyn Du, Abby Zarahn. “Multiracial students navigate identity on college applications” in The Burlingame B, Burlingame High School, Burlingame.
Judges’ Comments: “What makes this article stand out is how the writer takes a moment that all public education students have: checking a box for ethnicity and then showcases how it is so much more than just a selection for so many people in the community. Multiple perspectives and statistics tied into concise writing make for a piece that all can connect to.”
S04 Environmental, Health or Science Coverage
Maximus Kwan “Carlmont’s security cameras can recognize faces, but most students have no idea” in Scot Scoop, Carlmont High School, Belmont.
Judges’ Comments: “The school’s 20 to 30 security cameras are in plain sight, yet are unseen and unnoticed by students. By the fourth paragraph, readers have the right to be alarmed at the cameras that operate without a written policy, without notification to parents, and that have the capability for AI-powered appearance tracking and facial recognition. The story features an in-depth interview with an assistant principal concerning the use of and operation of the cameras, as well as with students, who share their concerns about the system. An interview with an attorney at the Electronic Frontier Foundation illustrates concerns with the camera system. Hyperlinks to relevant information are present, which add depth and context to the story. A graphic, individual photo and a photo gallery present relevant information in visual form.”
S05 Social Media Innovation
El Estoque, Monta Vista High School, Cupertino.
Judges’ Comments: “To think that El Estoque’s views were decreasing is hard to believe given the constant high-level journalism they produce, but it’s clear that they will not settle for less than the best. Analytics on content are one thing, but for aspect ratio? That’s how you know they’re students of the game. The storytelling has the depth and breadth necessary for professional-level work and repackages longform content into bite-size pieces that are attractive for any reader. Can’t wait to take these innovations back to my staff!”
